Much like mothers everywhere, roses are an extremely beautiful group of plants cherished throughout the world. From fragrance to color, size to habit, type range is extensive, and there's definitely one out there for everyone. So what more fitting gift could there be for honoring Mom on Mother's Day than the classic, symbolic rose? Selecting a rosebush - whether it's for Mom's garden or remembering her in your own - requires a few considerations, including location, color and size. Knowing where the plant will be used and how it should be enjoyed will help bring the most enjoyment as you honor that special lady in your life.

Greetings From Mother Nature

Why spend as much as $5 on a store-bought card when you can make your own for less, using the bounty from your garden? Giving homemade greeting cards inspired by Mother Nature is a wonderful way to reach out and share the beauty and joy of your plants with family and friends. And in today's hustle-bustle world of technology, they're another way to stay traditionally connected - to each other, as well as to the world around us. Dried flower petals and leaves are just the beginning for this thoughtful, fun and different craft project. |

Common Name: Mother-of-Thyme
Botanical Name: Thymus praecox
Mother-of-thyme is a low-growing, evergreen to semi-evergreen subshrub grown for its fragrant herbal leaves (used in cooking) and showy spring or summer display of lavender purple flowers. Bees, butterflies and other insect pollinators cloud around the small, two-lipped, nectar-filled blooms. Small seeds follow and may fall to the ground and self-sow. Full to partial sun is needed in porous, gravelly or sandy soil with moderate fertility. When well established, this thyme is quite heat and drought tolerant. Thyme is a must for the herb garden but also makes a perfect addition to rock gardens or as filler between paving stones where its fragrance is released when stepped on. |
